Those mirrors serve two purposes: 1) aimed at production, for easy/fast updating, readonly, and with fewer commits; 2) based on mercurial rather that git.

As a result they are a lot smaller. Typically for the current linux kernel : 1.6G for the source only, 3.2 GB for the original .git/ and 704M for .hgrc/ when using this mirror.
